To me (and all of what follows is my position and not meant to preach to anyone), to practice compassion for those who are "suffering" implies that I am somehow in a better situation than the other being, that in some way I am better off and the other person really does have need for what is a subtle form of pity. I think it is disrespectful to any being to have compassion for them. It is in the eyes of the beholder that the other person is somehow not OK the way they are. It is projection and judgement. No matter what things look like in this world of duality, what roles we play, etc. the integrity and power of any sentient life form, and justification for complete respect should never be doubted.
