Dear friends
I want to share this meditation with you. It came intuitively to me a morning when I was playing with my children.
It is a meditation that is good for children with high energy and difficulties concentrating, and helps them to feel their body and be present there.
It is not necessary that the child is sitting or lying still, you just need to gain her attention on your voice and her will to cooperate.
Butterfly Meditation for Children:
Imagine you have a butterfly flying around in your stomach, and it is tickling you gently with the stroke of its wings. It is a very beautiful butterfly with beautiful colors and patterns. The butterfly sprinkles magic dust every where in your stomach. Magic dust creating joy and wonderful feelings where ever it touches.
Now the butterfly finds a way to fly around in all of your body, and it starts to fly around and sprinkle magic dust all over the place. It flies:
- Down one leg .. right down in the foot
- And up again
- And down in the second leg .. right down in the foot
- And up again
- Up your back
- And down in one arm
- And up again
- And down in the other arm
- And up again
- It also flies up through the throat and up into the head
- Inn just behind the eyes and into the ears, all around your head
- And down into the heart
- Now it just flies around the whole body
The butterfly has brought magical gifts, that it placing in different parts of your body. Try to feel where in your body, it is leaving a magic gift for you, and point to the places and show them to me.
(ask now for each location)
What is in the present you received here in this location? (let the child to describe in her own words, listen without evaluating or commenting. It can be simple things as crayons or teddy bears..any thing is good. When the child is finished, you may give a confirmation, "very nice gift," and proceed to ask for the next location)
(After all gift places described)
Now try to look for the butterfly again, perhaps it is sleeping or resting somewhere in your body. Can you find it? Now ask the butterfly whether there is anything you can give it as a thank you.
(here, the child may say her friendship, etc.)
So give it to the butterfly, and give thanks for the good gifts it has given you and say goodbye ... (the child will say it aloud)
Now you have tried to meditate (or done the butterfly meditation), congratulations you did very well!
It went really well when I made it with my daughter Hannah. We did it on a day, when she was totally on fire and could not sit still and was in silly and playful mood, which is beautiful in itself. She was very grip of the exercise and lived dramatically into it, and after the meditation, she was still just happy, and we ended it by doing gymnastics to really get in touch with our bodies and feel into our selves. I sense that it is really good for children to be allowed to feel and enjoy their bodies in this way! - And this form of meditation helps them to combine a symbolic understanding with their body consciousness and to feel into specific priorities in the body and create an interpretation of the energy there. All while playing and using imagination for fun :)
