The health insurance industry is spending $1.4 million a day trying to continue the regime of delay and denial that ruins the lives of millions of Americans. They are providing astroturf policy briefings to Senators and reporters; then the insurance industry rewards Congresspersons and Senators who parrot the industry's biased studies as fact with campaign donations.
All this has been enough to make Harry Reid nervous. Reid has decided that it's OK for the Senate to go on vacation while millions of Americans are worried about losing their job--and their health care. And Reid's vacation does more than just look bad--it hurts hundreds of thousands of Americans and will cost this country over $3 billion.
According to studies, 14,000 Americans lose their health insurance every day. Over Reid's 30 day vacation, 420,000 Americans will lose their health insurance. As a country, we spend $7,900 per person on health care every year. These newly uninsured, jobless Americans will not be able to afford the 3.31 billion dollars in medical bills that they will acquire over the next year. Inevitably, they will declare bankruptcy, and the rest of
us--through federal "indigent care grants" and higher health insurance premiums--will pick up the tab for Harry Reid's Las Vegas vacation.
But there is something we can do. We can call our Senators and Representatives and let them know that this economy is causing us--their ultimate bosses--to scale back our vacation plans. We can politely ask our representatives in Washington to do the same, and to stay on the job in order to pass real health care reform which will help those 420,000 people who will lose their health insurance while Harry Reid goes on vacation in Las Vegas.
