CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta just reported that for some reason the elderly are one of the LEAST susceptible groups for the H1N1 (swine flu). Young children & pregnant women seem to be the most at risk groups followed by those 25-60 years old.
Gupta speculated that the elderly may have resistance to this strain of flu from the others strains it came from years ago. He also said that for most the H1N1 symptoms are fairly mild & that the H1N1 flu shot doesn't protect against the seasonal flu. A separate seasonal flu shot would be necessary for the seasonal flu.
By noting which groups are most susceptible I'm not urging those in these groups to use or not use the vaccine for H1N1 or seasonal flu.
Personally, I'll take my chances & just be diligent about washing my hands & avoiding crowds if my area has a flu outbreak as I have lots of doubts about vaccine efficacy & concerns about how vaccines affect our immune system function.
