I share a story I heard long ago that's carried me along my path.
There are apparently many versions, the one I've selected most closely
resembles the one that caught my attention - should you know a primary source
of this folklore, please share:
An old holy man had a dream in which he was speaking with God.
He asked God to show him heaven and hell - God showed him 2 doors.
The first door revealed a very large, inviting room. Beautifully decorated and comfortable.
In the main part of the room was a large table on which sat a large pot of stew.
All the people in the room were seated at the table. They were all thin, sickly, and very unhappy looking.
The man asked God what was wrong with them and why they were so unhappy and sickly looking.
God told him to look closer at each person’s arms.
When the man looked closer, he saw that each person had very, very long spoons attached to their arms.
The spoons were so long that each person could reach into the pot and spoon up the stew.
The problem, however, was that the spoon was so long that they were unable
to get it turned around into their own mouths and feed themselves.
God then took the man into the second door which led to a room with identical circumstances to the first:
the banquet table, the amazing smelling stew, and many people with the long spoons strapped to their arms.
The only difference in this room was that the people were smiling, laughing, joyful and all looked
very healthy. The man asked God why these people were so happy and healthy when they had all
the same conditions as the other people. God told the man that these people had learned to do something different…
they figured out that they could feed each other.
My questions to you are:
How can we integrate the 'heaven atmosphere' portrayed in the story above into our world?
Is it possible to motivate such a stance in our present world, is it realistic, is it responsible?
