This spring we're doubly, doubly blessed. The festival of Beltane coincides with the Taurus New Moon, perched between two intense Scorpio Full Moons. The cross-quarter gateway extends from the traditional Beltane (May Day) on May 1 through the zodiacal alignment on May 5. The potential for transformation goes quantum through this portal.
Beltane is one of the four cross-quarters of the solar year, the mid-point between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. Cross-quarters are special alignments of the Earth and Sun called Greater Sabbats. Energetically, they're considered even more powerful than the Solstices and Equinoxes, which are known as the "Lesser Sabbats." All eight Sabbats are points of balance in the solar wheel and remind us of the turning of the seasons. In honoring the Sabbats, we harmonize our lives with the rhythms of nature and the Divine.
At Beltane, we commune with the nature spirits, the devas, elementals and the plant kingdom who help us bring forth a rich harvest through the warmer months of the year. Dance, chant, drumming and ritual are traditional activities that help us attune to the natural world as we gather with friends and family to give thanks and celebrate the abundant blessings in our lives.
This year there's an intriguing interplay of the solar and lunar cycles with the New Moon coinciding with Beltane. Rarer still, this magical alignment falls between two Full Moons in the same sign. This is a special moment in the Earth's transition to the next world age. Through a natural process of death and rebirth, hope is renewed for another chance, a new life, in a troubled, waning world.
The May 5 New Moon marks an ending, and a new beginning. New life bursts forth at Beltane. Both are about planting for a future harvest. What is coming to completion in your life? What is it time to release? What are you creating? What are you grateful for? What does community mean to you?

The Line-Up
Joyful spring festivities are sandwiched between two very intense Scorpio Moons, so you may notice a "rollercoaster effect" with wide emotional swings during this time. Such is life. The old is making way for the new. Creation involves destruction, and we live in one of the most volatile times in human history. Celebrate. Pray. Bless. Offer and receive support. Savor the sweet nectar of each and every experience.
Beltane - May 1-5
Traditionally celebrated on May 1 and sometimes referred to as May Day, Beltane is the pagan celebration of spring and the flowering of life. The maypole represents the unity of the masculine and feminine, the god and goddess whose union creates life. Beltane is a festival of flowers, fertility, sensuality and delight. We dance the maypole and jump the Beltane fire in celebration of the infinite blessings bestowed on our home, our family and community. Astronomically, Beltane is the midpoint between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice and arrives when the Sun reaches 15 degrees Taurus. This year that happens on May 5 with the Taurus New Moon.
This rare line-up spells magic for us. Thoughts and intentions manifest swiftly, easily. Pause to give thanks and create with positive, powerful intent.
Taurus New Moon - May 5 - 8:18 AM EDT; 3:18 PM GMT
Like the synchronization of a cosmic clock, the Sun and Moon meet in Taurus on zodiacal Beltane. It's also festive Cinco de Mayo. And to top off the celebration, the heavens offer a meteor display more visible in the southern latitudes than in the north. At the New Moon we plant seeds that will bloom and bear fruit at a future Full Moon. In Taurus, we focus on the Earth, physical resources and values. Venus, goddess of love and beauty, joins the festivities in her home sign of Taurus, gracing us with abundance. A sweet trine with Venus, Saturn and Pluto, all in Earth signs, adds to the succulence of this alignment.
Scorpio/Taurus Wesak Full Moon - May 19/20 - 7:11 PM PDT May 19; 10:11 PM EDT May 19; 3:11 AM GMT May 20
On April 20, a Full Moon occurred in the first degree of Scorpio. The second Wesak Moon happens May 19/20 in the last degree of Scorpio. Life as we know it could change radically between Point A and Point B. In the relentlessly transformative sign of Scorpio, the Moon's rays dig deep to illuminate what's been held in the subconscious, both individually and collectively. In shamanic Scorpio, death and rebirth are the vehicle of transformation.
In Tibetan Buddhism, Wesak celebrates the birth, death and enlightenment of the Buddha. Again and again, death is spiritually linked with new life, the great cycle of existence. In esoteric teachings rooted in Buddhist and Vedic traditions, Wesak Festival is the second of the three great spring lunar festivals, a focal point for humanity to receive the cosmic energies of enlightenment. This is an ideal time for prayer and meditation in service to the collective.
