Wearing a Gem - Ruby

Hi All,

I am wearing a ruby in a silver ring all the time. I have always been attracted to rubies and I love their red color. But I have no idea why and would like to learn more about them and what they are for. Can anyone help me out with this? Or guide me to reading material?
