What's the deal with 2012?

I am so tired of hearing about this 2012 phenomenon, can someone here please tell me what's really going on?
There are 100's of books about this, and each one have their own idea about this event.
Is there anything that really points the fact that things are indeed going to change indeed in this GREAT way?
