The U.S. cable channel, Animal Planet just aired a very informative show, “Monsters Inside Me” about parasites that use humans as a host. They profiled 3 cases that are summarized below. This is one in a series of shows.

1) An infant began to have symptoms that developed rapidly until he was diagnosed w/ a roundworm that is carried by 85% of U.S. raccoons. The parasite had eaten a substantial portion of the child’s & caused partial blindness. The child was treated & at 4 years old has recovered more than the doctors expected, but is still impaired.

2) 4 days after returning from Vietnam, a soldier was diagnosed & treated for malaria in Tampa. This was so severe his parents made funeral arrangements which fortunately went unused. Malaria is carried by a parasite that is spread by mosquito. 36 years later his legs began to swell & a clear liquid oozed from the pores. Numerous doctors couldn’t ID the cause & could only prescribe painkillers. The leg pain continued to increase until he was in agony walking within a year.

When his testicles became swollen as he discussed his entire medical history w/ the urologist who realized when he was infected w/ the malaria parasite he likely contracted multiple parasites. Within 3 days it was confirmed that he had been infected w/ a second parasite that is very widespread in SE Asia. This parasite is responsible for swollen limbs, or elephantitis.

This parasite can remain dormant in the body for years. It grows 3-4” long. The dead parasite pieces has blocked his lymph nodes & this is why the clearish liquid oozed from his legs. His health was permanently compromised.

3) A fit about 30 year old husband in Philadelphia began having increasingly severe blurred vision, dizziness, & nausea which he & his wife first thought was the flu. When it was obvious it wasn’t flu it was incorrectly diagnosed as an inner ear infection. Symptoms increased until he was dizzy even when sitting.

When a CAT scan showed a mass in the back of the brain the neurologist thought it was a tumor. The biopsy showed it was parasites. Brain surgery was performed. The neurologist stated that given the huge number of eggs in the brain death would have been likely if surgery hadn’t removed them.

6 years before the couple had been to a nice resort in Africa on Lake Victoria where they swam in the lake. This parasite can be dormant in humans for 20 years, producing eggs the entire time.

What the show didn’t discuss is that no matter what country one lives in it is VERY easy to get parasites. One need not travel outside of one's respective country. Up until about 100 years ago humans in the U.S. took anti-parasite treatments as they knew we could get parasites as easily as our animals. For some reason we’ve gotten the notion that while we assume our pets & livestock need to be regularly wormed that we are somehow immune from parasites.

Parasites are only one of the unfriendly organism overgrowths that are very easy to get. Fungal & yeast overgrowth are very common & can also compromise our health severely.
