Unbelievable photos and stories of those who climbed and attempted to climb her. It includes great information on the Sherpa people. This is a companion book to the Imax movie, whose crew was filming on the mountain in 1996. They happened to have been present for the storm in which 8 died, the greatest loss of life in the history of Everest. This book was a major inspiration in art school and directly influenced the only exhibition I ever had - high altitude landscapes.
This is a well done "coffee table" book discussing lighthouses around the North American Great Lakes. There are fantastic modern and historical photos. One photo was of a crew, it captured me and the triggered the Twilight Zone experiences that followed. Louis Devrent, first mate, was shown along with his fellow officers of the "Marigold". I knew him, but didn't know why. He died almost 40 years before I was born. Those initial strange feelings led to a decade-long encounter with him, his relentless search for the ship's wheelman and a lady in Michigan (living niece of that wheelman). All he wanted to know was "what happened to Murphy?", but needed a living person to help find the answer. The lady wanted to uncover family history, but had no idea it would lead her to a complex tangle of events and her own Twilight Zone. In the end Louie's questions were answered and I laid his memory to rest near the site where he and Murphy died. The lady in Michigan came away with pieces of the "Marigold" and the discovery of Murphy's gravesite.
