This lunar eclipse will be the last until 2014.  I plan on not missing it, got my alarm set for 4:45 AM Pacific Standard Time on the 10th.  Last full lunar eclipse I observed, changed me forever.  Here is a diagram providing the ideal parts of the globe to view the eclipse.  Enjoy!

Total Eclipse of the Moon
December 10, 2011

Many of you have seen maps like this one and ask... "what does this have to do with an eclipse?" I have several cities listed on the map that are clickable. Go ahead and click on one! You should see a little movie pop-up in a few seconds. If you clicked on Honolulu, you will see a nice two and a half minute movie showing you how the eclipse will appear way out in the Pacific. It is a nice full eclipse. Now let's go to Frankfort Kentucky. You will see a very short movie... why? Basically, no eclipse! Go ahead and click on the other cities.

Topeka will see a partial eclipse with the moon setting in the trees. Denver may see the beginnings of the total eclipse if they have a nice clear view of the western horizon. Salt Lake City will see more of the totality before moonset. People in Sacramento may have a chance to see the moon emerging out of totality.

And what about Juneau Alaska? They will be able to see the complete eclipse! So if you are located in the white area of the map, you will see the entire show. If you are in the darker gray areas on the right side of the map, well... (You can click here to see a world map of the December 10th lunar eclipse.)

I just checked to see when the next total eclipse will occur for the states. It will be on April 15 2014. Click on the date and you will see the map for that eclipse. Again, white on the map is good even if it is a couple of years away!

(The software for the eclipse movies is free and can be found at http://www.stellarium.org/.)
